What are the Chakras and what do they have to do with crystals?

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel” or vortex and that is just what they are. The human form has over 200 chakras, located all over the body. We can think of them as intersections of primary or secondary energy channels. Energy channels being the Meridians, the veins and arteries, the nervous system, the lymph system, etc. Where ever these systems intersect there is a vortex of energy. There are seven (or eight again depending on what tradition you follow) primary chakras these are the largest and most influential on the body’s energy system as a whole. These seven chakras are based along the spine and correspond to major organs within the body. Starting at the base of the spine and moving through the body to the top of the head the chakras are as follows; root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, brow and crown.

When looking, from a metaphysical point of view, at how the body develops disease and or illness we see the chakras have a major roll in the well being of the human system. Ancient yogi’s have know and taught this for thousands of years, and we do well to learn from them. The basic understanding of how the body becomes diseased or ill is simple when looking at the situation from the energetic or metaphysical point of view. If the chakras are not open, are too open, are clogged, or out of balance in any way, illness occurs – an in-balance within the body’s systems leads to disease. Crystals, and a lot of other practices, can help us keep our chakras healthy and balanced. We can even learn how to manipulate the chakras for various purposes in our lives and consciously use them to serve us as a whole being. All chakras have two sides to them. All but the crown and root have an opening on the front of our physical form and on the back. The two sides meet in the center of our body and connect with each other via a ‘tube’ of prana, chi, life force, kundalini, as well as other traditional names for spirit.

Crown – Spiritual Attunement.

The crown chakra is located at the top of the head and it’s vortex-opening faces up towards the heavens, as if it were an actual crown on the top of our heads. This chakra is where inspiration and understanding of the ALL comes from. It is the connection we have to our higher awareness and understanding, to god (I use god as a term for the divine creator of all that is). The color associated with the crown chakra is white, violet or ultraviolet.

Brow – Insight.

The brow chakra is located in the center of our head where one might consider a ‘third eye’ to be in the center of the brow. This chakra controls our insight, our ability to see, not only the tangible world but also give us insight into others, our world and ourselves. Those with what is commonly called psychic vision use this center to ‘see’ into the intangible world around us. The color associated with the brow is indigo.

Throat – Communication.

When we communicate with others, the universe and ourselves we are doing so from this center. This is an important chakra as many of us are un-aware that we are constantly communicating and often things we are not intending to. Communication is not just words, it is body language, it is intent, it is action, etc. To become conscious of how we communicate with the world and ourselves is to live a conscious life – in the moment. It is the very beginning of understanding that we truly create the world in which we live. It is the first stepping-stone to understanding the process of manifestation. The color associated with the throat chakra is blue.

Heart – Compassion.

The heart chakra is often considered the most important chakra by healers and metaphysicians. Not only because it is directly connected to a major organ in our form for keeping us alive but also because it is the meeting place of the ‘higher’ and ‘lower’ chakras. The heart is where all healing, understanding, compassion, love and unity originate. The ‘higher’ chakras are considered higher not only because they are literally located higher in the body than the others but also because they’re vibratory frequency is higher than the others. They are the centers that deal also with the outside world as well as the inner worlds. The lower chakras deal mostly with the inner lives of the being and are often very personal. The heart is in the middle of these and so is considered by many to be the connecting bridge between the inner and outer worlds, between the ‘higher’ and ‘lower’ self. We can see this in many traditions that connect the heart chakra to the connection of the soul. Where the crown chakra connects us with god our heart chakra connects us with our own soul, our own true essence. It is also the place where all healing comes from. The color associated with the heart chakra is green.

Solar Plexus – Will and Intuition.

The solar plexus is the seat of the will and intuition in the human. It is in this chakra where we get out ‘gut feelings’ about people, places or situations. This chakra is also where we get our drive to do something, where the will to manifest, live, create, etc comes from. When we use our will it comes from this center. The color associated with the solar plexus is yellow.

Sacral – Creation.

The Sacral chakra is the center of creation in our bodies. This chakra regulates and is the primary influence in not only the sex organs and their functions but also inspired creativity. Regardless of what you are creating, this chakra has a roll to play in the process. The color associated with the sacral chakra is orange.

Root – Security and Grounding.

The root chakra is our connection to the earth. Like the crown and unlike the others this chakra opens towards the ground to keep us securely here. As well as the grounding this chakra is responsible for our feelings of security, and occasionally our sense of belonging. The color associated with the root chakra is red.

The easiest way to identify what crystal would be best for which chakra is by looking at the color. The idea behind crystal healing is that the energy of the crystal will help balance out the energy of the body or chakra – thus helping the body or chakra to again attain its naturally balanced state of being. Beyond color there are more ways to identify which crystals would be beneficial to use in specific situations. Below is a list of some basic crystal/chakra combinations.
